Garden Illumination and Lighting Services

Garden Illumination and Lighting We can create a stunning landscape that can be enjoyed during the day and night with inventive outdoor lighting solutions.

Reasons for Installing Landscape Lights

Safety: Avoid false walk on steps and pathways
Security: To drive off unwanted guests (persons and animals) from the place
Utility: To use your outdoor living space even in the night
Beauty: Make your home and garden dramatic and beautiful at night

Also we can illuminate landscaping to set a soft, romantic mood during the evening hours. May be you have a bench or a shadowy garden corner you need to illuminate for security reasons. A path leading through the garden may require landscape lighting to mark its boundaries. You might want to highlight some features of your backyard like a water fountain or pond.

After defined your reasons for wanting to add landscape lighting and determined what areas you would like to light, sketch your yard. Include in the sketch existing lights, buildings, benches, trees and shrubs, as well as the vegetation and decorations in the garden. Each of these items will reflect light or absorb it. Estimate the height of each of the objects, especially the foliage.

Basic Lighting Techniques

  • Downlighting: . With down lighting the fixture is mounted above the object to be lighted, such as in a tree or on the side of the house
  • Uplighting: It is the placement of the fixture below the object – mounted on a stake or buried in the ground
  • Transverse lighting: Transverse lighting is aiming the light across the ground to the object

Design Tips for Landscape Lighting

  • Reduce shadowing by overlapping fixtures’ spread of illumination ("circle of light")
  • Use fixtures with proper shielding to reduce glare and fixture visibility
  • Reduces glare and softens the overall light when spotlighting or highlighting a tree or architectural interest, by using 2-3 fixtures at different angles instead of one high wattage fixture
  • To make the voltage drop to advantage, place low light areas at the end of a cable run where they will naturally be dimmer due to voltage drop
  • Mix your lighting techniques to include uplighting, pathlighting, moonlighting, downlighting and wall washing
  • Use only well lights in your lawn to reduce damage from lawnmowers, fertilizers and watering systems. Install spotlights and floodlights in planter areas. However, well lights should not be used for fast growing trees as they are difficult to move
  • Exterior lighting visually expands the interior rooms of a residence. Without outside lighting, windows reflect interior lights, making the space seem smaller. When you can see the outside at night, the space expands to include the outside and you no longer feel as if you are in a goldfish bowl
  • The cable lengths in your design will determine many further aspects of your lighting system.Be sure to include all landscape features, buildings, individual light fixtures, and power supplies in your drawing
  • Lightly foliated and flowering trees are highlighted best if the fixture is installed close to the trunk
  • Use blue filters for moonlighting to give a more realistic appearance
  • Use uplighting to illuminate the tree from below as well for a more sophisticated and 3-dimensional effect

With carefully placed outdoor lights, you can enjoy the ambiance of your garden into the evening. The lighting the landscape brings beauty and safety but also have some deleterious effects on flora, fauna, and human health. Some of them are:

  • Continuous lighting depresses the formation and maintenance of chlorophyll in leaves
  • Light falling on pond water increases algae growth and suppresses the movement of zooplankton which feed on algae
  • Disrupts the physiology and behavior of all nocturnal animals studied (half the species on earth are nocturnal), including birds, bats, frogs and salamanders, fish, fireflies, and zooplankton
  • Bats which consume large quantities of mosquitoes are less likely to inhabit lit areas
  • Excessive exposure to artificial night lighting can alter basic biological circadian rhythms in animals, change predator-prey relationships, and even causes hormonal imbalances, upsetting entire ecosystems
  • Illuminated buildings confuse migrating birds accustomed to navigating by the stars

The beauty of a natural nocturnal environment and a star filled night sky are both increasingly rare sights in our developed world. The night is beautiful in itself as is our landscape when lighted by a full moon and by stars The recommendations to protect the health of our gardens and our nocturnal environment are simple.

  • Use the lowest amount of light necessary to see foliage
  • Highlight the garden sparingly and with shielded light bulbs
  • Turn off the lights when you are not there and in the middle of the night
