Pots and Containers for Plants

Plant pots and containersLot of lovely plant containers and pots are available for use in gardens, decks, porches, indoors etc and also hanging types. We should give some consideration to the plant's needs when choosing a planter. The color and material of the pots you choose is important. Try to match it with the color of the brick, stone, wood or metals nearby. Ensure planter has drainage holes.

Things to consider when choosing your container:

  • Avoid containers with narrow openings.
  • Use containers between 15 and 120 quarts capacity. Small pots restrict the root area and dry out very quickly. The size and number of plants to be grown will determine the size of the container used. Deep rooted vegetables require deep pots.
  • Make sure your pot has adequate drainage. Holes should be 1/2 inch across. Line the base of the pot with newspaper to prevent soil loss.
  • In hot climates use light-colored containers to lessen heat absorption and discourage uneven root growth.
  • Set containers on bricks or blocks to allow free drainage.
  • Line hanging baskets with sphagnum moss for water retention. Keep baskets away from afternoon sun.
  • If you choose clay pots, remember that clay is porous and water is lost from the sides of the container. Plants in clay pots should be monitored closely for loss of moisture.

Pot Materials:

Cheap plastic pots may deteriorate in UV sunlight and terracotta pots dry out rapidly. Glazed ceramic pots are excellent choices but require several drainage holes.

1. Wood: Wood has good water retention capacity. Hard woods are better against rot. Redwood and cedar are relatively rot resistant and can be used without staining or painting. All wood planters can be treated with preservatives. Avoid wood treated with creosote, penta or other toxic compounds since the vapors can damage the plants. As it shrinks and expands with moisture go for good construction and joints. Don’t put wooden containers directly on the ground.. One advantage of wooden containers is that they can be built to sizes and shapes that suit the location.

2. Metals: Generally heavy, so they are excellent for stabilizing tall plantings. They don't dry out, but they heat up and so need frequent watering or the roots could bake. It is a good choice for winter containers.

3. Fiberglass and resin: it gives the look of a natural feeling and so can easily fool the eye especially as they age. They are light, durable, inexpensive and often frost-resistant.

4. Plastic: Lightweight and moisture conserving. The semi-flexible pots work best for cold winters and are also good as liners. Plant directly into the plastic pot and then slip the plastic pot into the more decorative container. You get the benefits of both.

Things to consider for container Gardening:

1. Plant selection: Consider whether plant survive in dry condition and also the mature size of the plant. Choose a pot that is big enough for the plant's root ball as it grows.

2. Exposure: All pots dry out faster than soil in the garden. If plants are in full sun, choose a pot made from nonporous materials. Terra cotta dries out very quickly. Synthetic resin pots stay cooler and retain moisture longer.

3. Watering: If it is not possible to water the plants regularly then select a pot having a drip tray or a reservoir so that it can be filled from the bottom and soak up water as needed. Once a plant has been stressed from lack of water, it may never recover.

4. Mobility: if you have the plan to change the location of the pot for any reason whether it is for shade or convenience o0r beauty avoid heavy and large planters
